My takeaway on the Great Gatsby
My takeaway
Towards the ending of this book, I feel like the last chapter was extremely deep and sentimental, offering a deep theme: in a society filled with a lack of virtue and morality, chasing dreams in the company of these people will end in tragedy. In the book, after Gatsby and daisy originally fell in love Gatsby told Daisy to wait for him while he went to war and accumulated some wealth. However, during this time Daisy married Tom for his wealth and not for love. Fast forward 5 years when Gatsby becomes wealthy, he desires a reunion with Daisy. However even after realizing Daisy chose Toms wealth over his love, Gatsby still foolishly chased his dream of being with daisy. Gatsby did woo Daisy for a while, but Daisy was most likely only interested in his money not him. She couldn’t even choose Gatsby over Tom when she was given the choice. When Daisy ran over Myrtle Gatsby even said he would take the blame in order to protect her, thus leading to Gatsby unfortunate death. Daisy doesn’t even have the courtesy to come to Gatsby’s funeral, she just moves and goes no contact to live a peaceful life with Tom. My overall takeaway of this book is to not associate myself with moralless people. This book had such a tragic ending for a character that deserved love. The book just left a bitter taste in my mouth knowing that a man who accomplished the American dream met such a demise because the woman he loved was fake.
I enjoyed reading your insight from this book. I also felt sad that the book ended how it did. Gatsby definitely deserved love for his endless determination and perseverance.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about the theme that Fitzgerald pronounced throughout the book, the last chapter really exemplified what the American Dream is really about and how corrupt it truly is.
