What happend to cancel culture?
Most of us are familiar with cancel culture, it’s when somebody is publicly executed online for saying something wrong. However, is it used for the right or wrong reasons? I can’t deny that it has been crucial for punishing various famous public figures for their acts of sexual abuse, predatory behavior, fraud, racism, or forms of scandal. Look at EDP445, a former YouTuber accused of predatory behavior, shows the impact of cancel culture. The internet came together to completely erase his presence on the platform, and publicly shun him. However, the misuse of cancel culture is increasingly prevalent, resulting in significant harm to innocent individuals. Some groups figured out that they could exploit cancel culture to silence opposing viewpoints or push their own agendas, regardless of the facts or context. An example of this is the word police, the world police have begun to use cancel culture to morph society to follow their agenda. Take Andrew Tate for an example, a huge role model for a large population of male teens. He was canceled on various platforms and sent to prison just because the word police didn’t like his “misogynistic and racist” ideals, and they would use out of context quotes from him as their evidence. Look at what happened to Johhny Depp, a popular movie actor that had huge roles in various famous movies. He was accused of being abusive to his wife, the interned rushed to cancel him and completely destroy his career. The community didn’t wait for him to be proven guilty, they just saw that a “man” abused a “woman” and instantly took her side. In reality he was the one being abused, even after he was proven guilty, he was a monster in the public’s eye; his entire career was ruined. It doesn’t only effect celebrities though, it can affect all of us. If we make a slip up online and say somethings that remotely racist or sexist, our entire future is over. We have to walk on eggshells when we want to post something on the internet, all because of what cancel culture has become. The nature of cancel culture has become so toxic that it not only removes the principle of justice, it perpetuates a culture of intolerance and division.
I agree with you about how cancel culture can be very damaging at times especially when people are wrongfully accused for their actions. This makes everyone have to be very careful about what they say online, especially major role models and YouTubers and influencers.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that the internet has gotten to sensitive towards people and just cancel people who may not have even posted anything or said anything on the internet, like Johnny Depp. He was just dealing with his case on his own, but got cancelled without even posting anything.
